Pet Supplement Trends 2026: What Product Brands Should Plan For
Pet supplements had a different kind of year in 2025. After a long run of double-digit growth, U.S. retail sales reached about $2.9 billion — still growing, but at a moderating pace (Packaged Facts, March 2026). That slowdown is best read as a healthy reset: novelty-driven SKUs are leaving the shelf, while compliant brands with real, verifiable value are holding their ground. Meanwhile, the number of owners who use supplements kept climbing: more than half of dog owners now give their pets vitamins or supplements (APPA, 2025).
Read together, these two signals define 2026. The category is no longer growing on novelty alone. Owners are buying fewer, better products — and they expect brands to show their work. For a supplement brand launching this year, the six trends below — and the launch plan that follows — are the practical playbook.
1. The market has matured — plan for share, not hype
The U.S. market grew less than 3% in 2025, down from under 5% in 2024, after several years of rapid gains (Packaged Facts, 11th Edition, March 2026). About one-third of pet owners had purchased some type of pet supplement in the previous 12 months (Packaged Facts survey, December 2025). Globally, the pet supplements market was valued at about $2.95 billion in 2025 and is forecast to grow at a 6.34% CAGR through 2034 (Fortune Business Insights, 2026).
What does maturity mean for a new brand? A crowded shelf and price-sensitive owners. Differentiation now comes from a clearly defined health benefit, a format pets actually accept, and documentation buyers can verify — not from an eleventh generic "multivitamin."
2. Supplement use is mainstream — and increasingly preventive
In the APPA 2025 Dog & Cat Report, 53% of dog owners reported giving their pets vitamins or supplements — up 6 percentage points since 2023 and up 56% compared with 2018 (APPA, 2025). One-third of cat owners now do the same, up 70% over the same six-year period.
Two purchase motivations stand out in recent owner research: owners use supplements to address a current concern, and a growing share use them preventively — to support mobility, digestion or calm before a problem appears (SERAQUIN owner research, 2026, via Pet Trade Extra). For product development, this pushes brands toward everyday formats and clear "supports healthy X" positioning rather than reactive, condition-specific messaging.
3. Health priorities for 2026: mobility, calm, gut — and cats
Joint and mobility support remains the anchor of the category. Glucosamine-, chondroitin- and omega-3-based joint products are the formats owners understand best, and the segment continues to command premium shelf space (Future Market Insights, 2025).
The fastest-moving conversation, however, is calming and stress support. Industry trend reports for 2026 point to ingredients such as lemon balm, L-theanine and magnesium moving from human wellness into pet calming formulas, driven by owners who manage their own stress with supplements and expect the same for pets (Petfood Industry, April 2026).
Digestive health is the other engine: probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics appear in an expanding share of new products. Dogs accounted for about 63% of the pet probiotics supplement market in 2025 (Research and Markets, 2026) — which also highlights the opportunity on the feline side.
Cats remain the underpenetrated half of the market. Only about one-third of cat owners give supplements, versus 53% of dog owners (APPA, 2025), and cat-specific formats — powders, pastes and liquids that are easy to mix into food — are the practical unlock. For brands, that means a cat launch should start from a cat-palatability brief rather than a scaled-down dog formula: flavor, texture and dose size all need to be validated with the cat in mind from day one.
4. Format is a feature: soft chews lead, cat-friendly formats follow
Soft chews continue to dominate because they solve the compliance problem: a supplement that tastes like a treat gets eaten. In the joint-health supplement segment alone, soft chews held about a 48% share of formats in 2025 (Future Market Insights, 2025).
Beyond chews, 2026 formats are diversifying:
- Powders and liquids for cats and for owners who prefer mixing into meals
- Functional treats that blur the line between snack and supplement
- Single-ingredient and freeze-dried formats that signal simplicity and transparency (Scoular, Global Pet Expo 2026 trend report)
- Precise-dosage formats (tablets and capsules) for actives that are sensitive to heat or moisture during chew manufacturing
Format choice is not cosmetic. It affects ingredient stability, palatability, label claims and cost per dose. Brands that match format to the active ingredient — and to the pet — shorten their path to repeat purchase.
5. Clean label and radical transparency are now table stakes
Pet owners are reading labels the way they read their own. In a 2026 U.S. consumer study presented at the NASC Annual Conference, 76% of cat owners said brand values influence their choices (Nextin Research via Petfood Industry/WATTAgNet, May 2026). Retailers and distributors ask the same questions: Where is this made? What testing supports the label? Is the supply chain traceable?
For brands, this translates into practical expectations from a manufacturing partner:
- Batch-level certificates of analysis (COA) for active ingredients and finished goods
- Stability and palatability testing before launch
- Third-party test reports and clean-label-friendly formulations (natural preservation, no artificial colors)
- Clear documentation of GMP-compliant production
6. Commerce is online-first, with vet channels close behind
About 40% of pet owners used direct-to-consumer purchasing in the previous 12 months (U.S. consumer study, 2026, via WATTAgNet). E-commerce and subscription models reward brands that can explain their product in a listing, while veterinary clinics and specialty retail add credibility for science-led formulas.
Emerging markets are moving faster than the U.S. average: in China, pet supplement sales rose 20.3% year over year in the 12 months to November 2025 — more than double the growth of staple pet food (Moojing, 2026). For OEM suppliers, this widens the geography of opportunity: a formula and label system that can travel across markets matters more than ever.
7. What this means when you launch in 2026
- Anchor on one supported benefit — mobility, calm or digestive health — and build the story around it
- Choose the format the pet will actually eat, and verify stability and palatability early
- Design for compliance from day one: know the supplement rules in each target market (for example, U.S. FDA CVM requirements for products sold as food/supplements, and equivalent rules in the EU), and keep claims to "supports" language
- Ask for documentation before you commit: COA, stability data, third-party test reports and GMP evidence
- Plan for an online-first shelf: clear label, honest claims, and packaging that photographs well
- Test with a low-MOQ sampling partner before scaling to full production
The Huake Take
The 2026 pet supplement market rewards focus. A brand that launches one well-documented product — in the right format, with clean-label transparency and a story a retailer or vet can repeat — has a better chance than a brand that spreads itself across ten generic SKUs.
Huake Biotechnology supports dietary and pet supplement brands through OEM/ODM production of soft chews, tablets, powders and other formats, backed by GMP-compliant production systems and batch-level certificates of analysis. For pet lines, development includes species-specific palatability checks and stability validation under realistic feeding and storage conditions — a soft chew or powder for a pet is not simply a repurposed human formula. Sampling starts at USD 30 per formula, with MOQ and pricing quoted per product. If you are planning a 2026 launch, tell us the benefit, the format and the market — we will help you turn it into a manufacturable product, and every first enquiry includes a basic compliance checklist for your target markets at no extra cost.
